OUR STORY

A new generation of advocates is born

Care Generation launched in 2020 with support from the National Academy of Medicine. The organization developed from work begun by The Youth Movement Against Alzheimer’s (YMAA) which in January 2018 introduced a caregiving bill towards the creation of a statewide Care Corps in California. Following a model similar to other national service programs such as AmeriCorps, this program will incentivize young high school or college graduates to spend one to two years providing non-medical respite care to family caregivers of persons with dementia.

Within two legislative cycles, our bill gained the support of more than 30 healthcare and public health organizations, and received endorsements from the mayors of LA, Oakland, Stockton, and Bakersfield. In 2020 the Governor’s Alzheimer’s Task Force recommended this work as a Top10 legislative priority.

During the 2020 election cycle, YMAA spoke with 12 presidential candidates including Joe Biden.  Biden shared his plan to support youth in response to the caregiving public health crisis spurred by the growing aging population.

Realizing the momentum in California and being a part of the call to action across the country, we knew we needed an entity to implement a National Care Corps and demonstrate the personal investment of young people. This is when Care Generation began.

Through seed funding from the National Academy of Medicine’s Healthy Longevity Global Grand Challenge, Care Generation, a 501(c)4, was created as the action branch of YMAA. We’re focused on sparking action, lobbying elected officials, and working with labor, aging, and healthcare organizations to implement innovative caregiving solutions.
